Sinn has just released new variations to the popular 556 lineup, and in so doing added a pop of color to its mostly black-and-white catalog. The new dial colors include emerald green, citrine yellow, aquamarine blue, and carnelian red.

The Release

The Sinn 556 features the same case design as the previous 556 models, with the stainless steel satinized case measuring at 38.5 mm in diameter, a case thickness of 11 mm, and lug width of 20 mm. It comes on a canvas strap with a butterfly clasp. Weight without the strap is 65 grams. The metallic dial colors combined with the rhodium-plated applied indices and anti-reflective sapphire crystal give the 556’s sporty a bit of extra flair. There is a sapphire crystal on the caseback, too, which displays the Sellita SW200-1 movement. The watch offers 200 meters of water resistance thanks to the screw down crown.

The Context

The Sinn 556 is arguably one of the company’s most popular watches, providing its wearers with a solid, tool watch, utilitarian design. While Sinn has released other 556 watches in other colors in recent years, the dial options have remained relatively subdued and versatile. The new dial options provide the most unique looks yet. The move is certainly on trend, following both Rolex and Omega, who both recently introduced a rainbow of colors to their signature three-hand models.

Our Thoughts

The Sinn 556 is a classic watch and it makes sense that it is regularly recommended as a true “go anywhere, do anything” model. Sinn wisely is adding a bit of flair to the collection with these new color options, and that seems that right on trend, though perhaps they could be accused of playing catch up. For a brand that’s been exceptionally restrained in its use of color, these new dials stick out more than the polychromatic sprees of Rolex and Omega, two brands with rich histories of using vibrant dials. As such, it’s unclear if they’ll be as popular as Sinn’s more classic black and white offerings. We’ll see. But variety and color are never bad things and we’re excited about the direction Sinn is taking, even if it is just a short detour.

Availability

The new colorful Sinn 556s are available now through Sinn authorized dealers. Each dial color is limited to 400 pieces. The models will retail for $1,460 and come with a 2-year manufacturer’s limited warranty. More information can be found on the Sinn website
